Dear Friend of Open Streets,
Following consultation with Southwark Council, local businesses and residents, we are happy
to announce that London’s first Open Streets is coming to Great Suffolk St in May.
Open Streets is about connecting people and places, and boosting local businesses. Born 40
years ago in Latin America, hundreds of Open Streets events take place every year in cities
across Europe, Africa and the USA, where they have inspired permanent urban change.
On Sat May 30th, Great Suffolk St will be closed to motor traffic between 11h00 and 16h00
from Southwark St to Toulmin St so that adults and children can safely play, walk, bike, run,
shop, eat, or just sit, listen to music and relax. Southwark St and Southwark Bridge Rd will
remain open to traffic and the junction with Great Suffolk St will be marshalled.
There will be a variety of activities on offer in the Fitness, Relaxation, Arts, Kids and Cycling
zones, and we’ll share more details shortly. The event itself and all the activities are free.
Local resident? Make sure you put Sat May 30th in your calendar and come down and enjoy
the fun. If you would like to offer to help, or suggest a new activity, please contact us through
our website at openstreetslondon.com.
Run a local business? Good news! There will be several thousand extra visitors on the day, so
stock up, staff up and spread out on to the street to maximize your presence. We really want
local firms to feel part of and to benefit from Open Streets, so do contact us if you would like
to discuss opportunities.
If you are a car owner, please do not park on Great Suffolk St on Sat May 30th. There will be
plenty of advance warning signs nearby. Take a look at the route map overleaf.
You can email us or sign up to our newsletter at openstreetslondon.com if you would like us to
update you as the event draws nearer - or you can follow us on Twitter @OpenStreetsLDN.
We look forward to welcoming you to London’s first Open Streets!
Best wishes,
The Open Streets Team
